Horning Village

Horning Village

Horning is one of the most picturesque waterside villages on the Broads.  If you only have time to visit one Broadland village, then Horning has to be it.

The village lines the northern bank of the River Bure, approx. two miles from Wroxham. Stretching along the river for about a mile, it has many waterside properties (best viewed from a boat). There are no less than 3 waterside pubs (all very good), shops, restaurant, tea-rooms, boat trips and other attractions to enjoy.

Horning Ferry is on the outskirts of the village, about a mile along Lower Street past the many boat yards. It is well worth a walk on a fine day and there is a marina, restaraunt and of course the Ferry Inn itself.

The actual church of Horning is about another mile walk along country lanes outside of the village itself, but you are rewarded by a fine church and a path leading to views of the River Bure - an ideal spot for a sit down and sandwich before making the return walk to the village.

Moored back at the village green in the centre of Horning, the Southern Comfort paddle-steamer is a purpose built trip boat for the Broads and provides regular trips from Horning along the River Bure, through the village and out to Ranworth and back. The boat has a decent bar and sometimes even a jazz band playing onboard.

We can personally recommend this as a fantastic way of seeing the village from the broads!

Above and Below - Horning village staithe (above) and Horning Ferry and riverside (below)

Horning staithe is a lovely spot to start a tour, but it is also a great place to just sit and watch the world float by ... or to try and find a space to moor! The name Horning means the "folk who live on the high ground between the rivers" It's history dates back to 1020 when the manor was given by King Canute to the newly founded Abbey of St Benet.
